چکیده

The Cassini measurements of C2H2 and C2H6 at ∼5 mbar provide a constraint on meridional transport in the stratosphere of Jupiter. We performed a two-dimensional photochemical calculation coupled with mass transport due to vertical and meridional mixing. The modeled profile of C2H2 at latitudes less than 70 follows the latitude dependence of the solar insolation, while that of C2H6 shows little latitude dependence, consistent with the measurements. In general, our model study suggests that the meridional transport timescale above 5-10 mbar altitude level is &1000 years and the time could be as short as 10 years below 10 mbar level, in order to fit the Cassini measurements. The derived meridional transport timescale above the 5 mbar level is a hundred times longer than that obtained from the spreading of gas-phase molecules deposited after the impact of Shoemaker-Levy 9 comet. There is no explanation at this time for this discrepancy. Low ozone concentrations over Macquarie Island during 1997 Part I: trajectory analysis

Ozone concentrations have been decreasing globally for the last 20 years in part due to increasing chlorine concentrations in the stratosphere (WMO 1999). The most dramatic example of these reductions has been identified in the high latitude southern hemisphere, where ozone levels are nearly entirely depleted in the lower stratosphere during September and October each year. This phenomenon, whi...

Causes and impacts of changes in the stratospheric meridional circulation in a chemistry-climate model

The climate of the stratosphere is known to be subject to long-term changes induced by anthropogenic emissions of long-lived greenhouse gases (GHGs) as well as by emissions of ozone depleting substances (primarily chlorofluorocarbons, CFCs). Enhanced concentrations of CFCs have led to strong ozone depletion over the last decades. Thanks to the Montreal Protocol and its amendments and adjustment...

Effects of Non-photochemical Processes O N the Meridional Distribution and Total Amount of Ozone in the Atmosphere

The photochemical equilibrium distribution of oAone below 41 km. is computed for the solstices and equinoxes from recent rocket obscrvatioiis of the solar ultraviolct energy received at the top of the atmosphere. In this study an attempt is made to investigate the important part played by the mean scnsonal transport processes in distributing the ozone below 41 km. in the stratosphere To make su...

Experiments with a Stratospheric General Circulation

The 18-level primitive equation, general circulation model described in Part I was used to study the diffusion of two idealized tracers in the stratosphere. One traccr was designed to simulate broadly the behavior of the radioactive tungsten which escaped lnto the stratosphere following nuclear tests in the Tropics, the other was taken as a photochemical ozone distribution. Both the meridional ...

The strength of the meridional overturning circulation of the stratosphere

The distribution of gases such as ozone and water vapour in the stratosphere - which affect surface climate - is influenced by the meridional overturning of mass in the stratosphere, the Brewer-Dobson circulation. However, observation-based estimates of its global strength are difficult to obtain. Here we present two calculations of the mean strength of the meridional overturning of the stratos...
